How to write a good URL slug
A slug is read by people, search engines and AI answer engines alike, so it should say what the page is about in a few plain words. These rules cover almost every case:
- Lead with the main keyword. Put the phrase people search for first:

- Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only. Paths can be case-sensitive on some servers, so mixed case invites duplicate URLs, and spaces or symbols get percent-encoded into something unreadable.
- Drop filler words, but keep the meaning. "The", "a" and "of" can go. Words like "not", "vs" or "how" can change what a title means, so if yours depends on them, switch off Remove stop words or edit the result by hand.
- Leave dates and IDs out unless the page is genuinely tied to a date.

Using your slug in a CMS
Paste the generated slug into the field your platform provides:
- WordPress: set Settings → Permalinks to Post name, then edit the URL (permalink) field of each post or page.
- Shopify: use the URL handle under Search engine listing on products, collections and pages.
- Webflow: use the Slug field in page settings or on a CMS item.
- Custom or static sites: use it as the route or file name, for example
/blog/your-slug/.
Changing a slug after publishing
Avoid it for pages that already rank or have backlinks. If you must change one, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, update internal links and the canonical tag, and resubmit your XML sitemap. Without the redirect, visitors and crawlers hit a 404 and the page can lose the signals it had built up.
